Unlikely Heroes

Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring forth. (Proverbs 27:1, NIV)

Years ago, when my son was a toddler, I said goodbye at the front door and left for work. As I was getting in my car, I remembered my coffee.  I turn to walk back to the house. I see Austin. Austin sees me.  Our eyes meet. He smiles and I know exactly what’s about to happen. He’s going to run and jump off the three foot porch into my arms just like he does when I get home from work. Only this time is different…I’m too far away.  I never made it in time and he had quite a fall.

Things don’t always turn out like we expect. Life has a way of surprising us.

That’s certainly the case with the unlikely heroes we meet this week.  In the story (2 Kings 7), the city is under siege by a foreign army.  Everyone in the city is doomed.  But miraculously, God saves the day through an unlikely source.  You might expect the heroes would be valiant solders.  Or you might expect that the King exhibited great leadership and diplomacy.  But you’d be wrong.

The heroes in the story were four homeless outcasts. Unexpected and surprising.

There’s a hero in you, too.  The key is letting God use you.  These men were providentially in the right place at the right time – then they said “yes” to God.

Follow him and you can find your own heroic qualities.
